Water
tributes and poetry
Water is life's mater and matrix, mother and medium.
There is no life without water.
- Albert Szent-Gyorgyi quotes (1937 Nobel Prize for
Medicine, 1893-1986)
Through water flows the wisdom of the universe. Is
it not
this wisdom itself which has created water as a tool for its own
creativity?
- Theodor Schwenck, Sensitive Chaos
At the ancient pond
a frog plunges into
the sound of water
- Zen poet Basho
Water is the only drink for a wise man.
- Henry David Thoreau ( 1817-1862)
Water has a memory and carries within
it our thoughts and
prayers. As you yourself are water, no matter where you are, your
prayers will be carried to the rest of the world.
- Masaru Emoto, The Secret Life of Water

Waterfall at Lu-shan by Li Po
Sunlight
streams on the river stones.
From high
above, the river steadily plunges -
three
thousand feet of sparkling water -
the
Milky Way pouring down from heaven. |
Because water has such great powers
of absorption and conservation it is a treasurhouse of innumerable
secrets. The whole of the history of mankind is recorded in the rivers,
lakes and oceans of the world ... and the traces of all beings, all
objects and all events live on in water.
- Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov, The Mysteries of Fire and
Water
All the water that will ever be is, right now.
- National Geographic, October 1993
Water
RALPH WALDO EMERSON
The water understands
Civilization well;
It wets my foot, but prettily,
It chills my life, but wittily,
It is not disconcerted,
It is not broken-hearted:
Well used, it decketh joy,
Adorneth, doubleth joy:
Ill used, it will destroy,
In perfect time and measure
With a face of golden pleasure
Elegantly destroy
Water is H2O, hydrogen two parts, oxygen one, but there is also a third
thing, that makes water and nobody knows what that is.
- D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930), Pansies, 1929
When the well is dry, we know the worth of water.
- Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), Poor Richard's
Almanac, 1746
Between earth and earth's atmosphere, the amount of water remains
constant; there is never a drop more, never a drop less. This is a
story of circular infinity, of a planet birthing itself.
- Linda Hogan, Northern Lights, Autumn 1990
Water is the driver of Nature.
- Leonardo da Vinci
We forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are one.
- Jacques Cousteau
Take almost any path you please, and ten to one it carries you down in
a dale, and leaves you there by a pool in the stream. There is magic in
it ... Yes, as every one knows, meditation and water are
wedded forever.
- Herman Melville (1819-1891),
Moby Dick, 1851
I understood when I was just a child that without water, everything
dies. I didn't understand until much later that no one "owns" water. It
might rise on your property, but it just passes through. You can use
it, and abuse it, but it is not yours to own. It is part of the global
commons, not "property" but part of our life support system.
- Marq de Villiers, Water, 2000
There is no small pleasure in sweet water.
- Ovid
Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.
- W.H. Auden
Man - despite his artistic pretensions, his sophistication, and his
many accomplishments - owes his existence to a six inch layer of
topsoil and the fact that it rains.
- Unknown
Water is the supreme magic medium which permeates and impregnates the
universe. If you know how to listen to a drop of water it will speak to
you.
- Omraam Mikhael
Aivanhov, The Mysteries of Fire and Water
We Love Water.
We Thank Water.
We Respect Water.
We Are All Water.
We Are All One.
- Masaru Emoto, Messages from Water |
We call upon the waters
that rim the earth,
horizon to horizon, that flow in our rivers and streams,
that fall upon our gardens and fields,
and we ask that they teach us and show us the way.
- Chinook Indian Blessing
Only in quiet waters do things mirror themselves undistorted.
Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world.
- Hans Margolius
I had less difficulty in the discovery of motion of heavenly bodies in
spite of their astonishing distances than in the investigations of the
movement of flowing water before our very eyes.
- Galileo Galilei 1564-1642
In the battle between the stream and the stone, the stream always wins
-- not through strength, but through persistence.
- Unknown
The waters listen as they flow along; they know the origin of heaven
and earth.
- Rig Veda
Water is a Lovely Thing
Julia W. Wolfe
Water is a lovely thing—
Dark and ripply in a spring,
Dark and quiet in a pool,
In a puddle brown and cool;
In the river blue and gray,
In a raindrop silver gray,
In a fountain crystal bright;
In a pitcher frosty cold,
In a bubble pink and gold;
In a happy summer sea
Just as green as green can be;
In a rainbow far unfurled,
Every color in the world;
All the year from spring to spring,
Water is a lovely thing.
And God sends down water from the skies, giving life thereby to the
earth after it had been lifeless.
- The Koran
Man is a complex being; he makes the deserts bloom and lakes die.
- Gil Stern
Why, then, does water, which has no life characteristics of
its own, form the very basis of life in all life's manifestations?
Because water embraces everything, is in and all through everything;
because it rises above the distinctions between plants and animals and
human beings; bcause it is a universal element shared by all; itself
undetermined, yet determining; because, like the primal mother it is,
it supplies the stuff of life to everything living.
- Theodor Schwenk
By means of water, we give life to everything.
- Koran
Water from an ancient well
- Mazisi Raymond Kunene
See the gathering rain-clouds rise
From the steaming hope of loving hearts
Warm
Beat
Drum, drum, drum
Too long the tongue has tried
Nay, dried
The patient desert
Waits
See the bodies fall
Like raindrops
Nurture deep
Love dust
Root intention
Now unveil
The karoo blooms again
Joyous
Comes the golden flowers
Purple shrubs and sunsets
Green
What shall quench our burning thirst?
Let me drink, let me drink
Let me drink from thee
Oh beautiful Africa
Forever
His perpetual wisdom
Succulent sustenance sustains
My song
Water
Water
Water from an ancient well
Oh beautiful Africa
That's where I'll always dwell
Water
Water
Water from an ancient well.
The frog does not
Drink up
The pond in which
He lives.
- American Indian proverb
When you drink the water, remember the spring.
- Chinese Proverb
We forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are one.
- Jacques Cousteau
All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to
where it was.
- Toni Morrison, The Site of Memory, 1998
A river does not just happen; it has a beginning and end. Its story is
written in rich earth, in ice and in water-carved stone, and its story
as the lifeblood of the land is filled with colour, music and thunder.
- Andy Russell, The Life of a River, 1987
It is a fascinating and provocative thought that a body of water
deserves to be considered as an organism in its own right.
- Lyall Watson, Supernature, 1973
If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water.
- Loren Eisley, The Immense Journey, 1957
The upholder of the cycles which sustain all Life is water. In every
drop of water dwells a deity whom indeed we all serve. There also
dwells Life, the soul of the primal substance - water - whose
boundaries and banks are the capillaries that guide it, and in which it
circulates.
- Viktor Schauberger, The Water Wizard: The
Extraordinary Properties of Natural Water
Every man you meet's your son.
Every woman is your daughter.
Go find someone who's thirsty,
And give them water.
- Butch Hancock, Give them Water, War and
Peace,

Throughout our lives, we exist mostly as water. This connection to
water applies to everyone, all over the world. So how can people live
happy and healthy lives? The answer is to purify the water that makes
up your body. Water in a river remains pure because it is moving. When
water becomes trapped, it dies. Therefore, water must constantly be
circulated. The water - or blood - in the bodies of the sick is usually
stagnant. When blood stops flowing, the body starts to decay, and if
the blood in your brain stops, it can be life threatening. We
all have an important mission: To make water clear again, and
to create a world that is easy and healthy to live in. In
order to accomplish our mission, we must first make sure that our
hearts are clear and unpolluted. If all the people of the
world can have love and gratitude, the pristine beauty of the earth
will once again return.
